Techviews – Oneplus 5T

Oneplus release two of its flagships, Oneplus 5 and Oneplus 5T in the year of 2017.
Oneplus 5T had some much-needed improvements over Oneplus 5 and was released five months later at the exact same price point as its predecessor.
Leaving the people who bought the 5 disappointed.
They did the same thing last year when they released Oneplus 3T just a few months after Oneplus 3.
But today, it’s all about Oneplus and its latest flagship.
And I was lucky that one of my good friends Mr. Neel Solanki bought the 64GB ROM 4GB RAM variant of the Oneplus 5T recently.
This gave me an opportunity to know more about the device from an owner’s perspective as I interviewed him about the device and the environment surrounding it.
Neel is a front-end developer at a company named Solulab in Ahmedabad.
It was more of a discussion than an interview and mostly informal but I’ll try to divide it into questions.
I will try to put the questions in a chronological order as the discussion was more of a to-fro kind than a linear kind.
What do you think about Oneplus as a company?
Neel: Well, this is my first time using a Oneplus product but up until now the experience is quite decent.
What options did you consider before settling down to Oneplus 5T?
Neel: It was kind of a no-brainer for me. I already decided a long ago that my next phone will be a Oneplus. Though I did consider a Galaxy S8, Oneplus 5T was way too tempting and was a lot cheaper than the S8.
Which phone did you use before getting the Oneplus 5T?
Neel: Like everyone, I wanted a phone which would last a lifetime and what’s better for that than a Motorola.
Having the same thought in my mind, I bought the Moto G4.
Was left disappointed as it faced the screen burn-in issue within a year of buying it and I wasn’t the only one. Some of my friends faced the same issue.
Moto G4 might be a good phone for those with light to moderate usage but for a heavy user like me, it simply wasn’t.
What was your first experience when you unboxed the phone?
Neel: The phone felt a little heavier than I expected but the build quality was top notch *wink wink*.
The aluminum unibody felt premium in hand and the phone looked beautiful overall.
That was the outside. How was your first software experience?
Neel: Oxygen OS is very fluid. An almost stock experience with some awesome and much-needed add-ons.
I’ve used many ROMS but Oxygen OS simply takes the crown.
I can ask you about all the major components of the phone separately, but that will take time, so, tell me about the best things the 5T offers to its user?
Neel: Where should I start?
Battery life: The battery life is amazing. I am a heavy user and it lasts me a single day easily. For my parents, it would easily last two or even three days.
Dash Charger: Dash charger is awesome. It is a 4A charger which charges my phone from 5% to 100% in 45 mins.
Camera: Camera is great when compared to other phones in this price range.
I personally don’t like using flash while clicking pictures but the low light performance of the back camera wasn’t that good out of the box. But an update or two later, it was fixed and there was a significant improvement in the low light performance of the back camera.
Front camera, on the other hand, was great both in normal conditions and in low light out of the box.
Slow-mo is mediocre in room light with hazy results but works fine in proper lighting.
Manual mode is very thorough and you can literally change almost anything to suit your preference.
Proximity sensor: Proximity sensor is one of the most underrated hardware features of a cellphone. And it really works fine on this phone.
I simply love the fact that when I pull the phone out of my pocket, it isn’t unlocked with a couple of calls made to the white house and some texts to my ex that I still love her.
Security: The face unlock is hands down the best. But it’s just for showing off. I don’t feel secure using it and that’s where fingerprint sensor comes into the scenario.
It is really snappy. Sometimes it feels like I unlocked the phone just by thinking about it. and it is secure as even your twin doesn’t have similar fingerprints *shots fired*.
Any other thing which you like about Oneplus 5T compared to other smartphones?
Despite having a full aluminum back, there is ZERO heating.
By Zero, I seriously mean ZERO. Even after long gaming sessions, the phone was as cold as an ice cube.
That 18:9 ratio display is beautiful. It simply pleases the eyes. It’s my first time owning an 18:9 device and I am loving it.
Apart from that, portrait mode, which is a hit or miss case for most phones out there is actually very impressive in the Oneplus 5T.
Now the question for which the users are actually reading the blog. Is Oneplus 5T worth it?
I have the 64GB ROM, 6GB RAM variant which costs ₹32,999 and after using it for quite some time, I can say that, yes, it is worth every penny.
The 128GB ROM and 8GB RAM, on the other hand, is an overkill in my opinion.
I know people might say that the phone lacks an SD card slot but personally speaking, 64GB is more than enough for a normal user.
You won’t miss those extra 64GB unless you’re a professional photographer.
And if you’re a professional photographer, why are you using a phone anyway. Go buy a DSLR.
That extra 2GB of RAM is irrelevant as well. My phone uses 3GB to sometimes 4GB at max.
Conclusion:
Oneplus 5T is a phone with everything you’ll ever need.
You should buy the 64GB variant as 128GB variant is an overkill and is of no such use.
It is priced appropriately and if the prices drop, consider that your lucky day.
