Middle-Class versus Google Pixel 2
2017 was a wonderful year for smartphones and smartphone users.
We saw everything, from literally bezel-less screens to dual cameras. Battery capacity and life both seem to be improving drastically as we saw a few of them 5000 mah and above.
Even Apple came aboard with their A11 bionic processor which drastically improves battery life as well as the performance of an already almost perfect phone and how can we forget the unique bezel-less design with a notch.
As we came closer to the release of pixel 2, the bar was set so high that we as users were to be disappointed unless the phone could do some tricks as it washes our clothes while flying over the borders and saving us from the terrorist attacks.
But we had hope. We had hope that Google can pull this off, Google can do what others can not. They can give us what we desire. Satisfy the inner geek of ours like they always do, with each and every product of ours.
The D-day came on 19th October 2017, when the phone finally hit the market and I was able to get hands-on the piece itself. It was mediocre from the first glance and I was left disappointed.
And as the blog is all about middle-class people and their internal struggle to get the tech they desire and do not regret it later, the price was even a bigger blow.
I totally understand that Google put state of the art hardware(inside the phone) with a clean and responsive software to give us the best Android experience we can get. But the price is too steep for that.
Yes, the camera is amazing, even better than the last year’s pixel, which is a big accomplishment in itself.
And obtaining the portrait mode results from a single camera which put all the dual camera phones to shame was a brilliant and brave idea.
You should have seen my face and how I was drooling when I heard that instead of the usual hardware approach everyone was using, Google took the software approach to get that perfect portrait mode.
And the front firing speakers are fairly loud as well, but trust me, no one play games or watch movies with speaker firing at full volume when they are travelling in a fully packed metro as that is the only time I think people actually game or watch a movie on a smartphone.
Which brings me to another con of owning a pixel 2, lack of a headphone jack.
If you are middle-class, owning a decent Bluetooth earphone is far from what you want to spend your money on especially when you can get good wired earphones below ₹1000.
They give us a connector in the box, a valid argument indeed, but with that 2700 mah battery, a heavy user like me have to keep a power bank handy just in case I need some extra juice to push the phone through the day and when that day comes, my music will suffer.

- 64/128 GB ROM
- 5 inch 1080p display
- front firing stereo speakers
- 2700 mah battery(a bit on the lower side but nothing a power bank can’t fix)
- no headphone jack(a new trend which doesn’t suit over 70% of the users but who cares?)
Google pixel 2 has everything you expect out of a 2017 flagship.
Everything except one, the aesthetics to compete against its competitors.
As a middle-class user, if I am paying ₹61,000, which is almost the same as we pay for a Galaxy Note 8 which in my view is the best smartphone you can buy if you go over that ₹50,000 bracket(we’ll talk about that as well in another post), I need something beautiful in my hand.
And even Google realized that, as they dropped the price by ₹10,000 straightaway due to the lack of sale despite all the efforts they put through during the Flipkart sale.
What to do with the ₹61,000 you just saved?
The answer is simple, if you were getting the phone for the camera, a Oneplus 5T/LG V30+ + any average DSLR would cost you around the same as a pixel 2.
No matter how far the smartphone camera has come, it is still subpar when compared to an entry-level DSLR. I hope this answered the question brewing in your mind.
If you were getting the phone for those front-firing stereo speakers(which would be a very unusual reason, but for the sake of that one out of billions of humans who had this thought), get JBL flip 4(blog coming soon) with Oneplus 5T/LG V30+ and you are good to go.
Should one buy Google Pixel 2 at all?
Yes, absolutely. If you are getting it below ₹40,000, it is a no-brainer but knowing Google, it’ll never be that inexpensive as even Google pixel after over a year and a successor later costs over ₹40,000.
What about Google Pixel 2 XL?
Though the story of Pixel 2 revolves around the aesthetics, Pixel 2 XL is a completely different story and we shall discuss it later on in another blog.
