CES(Consumer Electronic Show) 2018 was held from 9th Jan 2018 to 12th Jan 2018 at the LA convention centre.

What is Clear ID?
Despite getting snappier day by day, a fingerprint sensor still takes a lot of space on the outside of your phone, on the front, at the back/sides.
But with Synaptics’ new sensor, it wouldn’t need a separate fingerprint reader module to read your fingerprint.
It’d do the same thing, but from below the glass of the screen and in a different way.
Simply put, no more of those sensors at the front or the back. We’ll just have to place our finger on the screen and Voila! Phone unlocked.
How does Clear ID work?
Well, before knowing that, you should know how any fingerprint sensor work so that we can work out the differences between them.
Everyone has a different fingerprint pattern.
When you first place our finger on a fingerprint sensor, it creates an image of the ridges and valleys which constitutes your fingerprint using electric current.
Now, whenever you put your finger on the sensor after that, it matches the image with the one it created at first.
Clear ID sensor takes a different approach. The approach similar to your retina scanner.
When you put your finger on the place beneath which the sensor is placed, it clicks a picture of your fingerprint.
It then matches the picture with the new picture it took when you wanted to unlock your phone.
Is Clear ID secure?
CES 2018 was a big and busy event with thousands of people wanting to try thousands of products.
So, maybe, we couldn’t try out everything Clear ID had to offer.
But one thing is certain.
If the screen is pressure sensitive, it’s much more secure than if it isn’t.
Drawbacks of Clear ID?
There is one for the records.
The response time is 0.7 seconds.
On paper, this looks like a very short period, but when compared to the current fingerprint readers, it turned out to be as much as 75% slower.
Is Clear ID available on the market right now?
Not exactly.
The handset they were showcasing it on was a prototype from a Chinese smartphone manufacturer named Vivo.
Apart from that, Synaptics confirmed that they are currently working with five market leaders to bring Clear ID to their smartphones.
Any guesses?
Apart from Vivo, Apple might be just in line after the famous “twin failure” of Face ID to get the Clear ID for their phones.
Rumours were there that Oneplus‘ next phone might have a no reader fingerprint sensor. That might be an indication towards the Clear ID.
Samsung can definitely use some of the Clear ID to get rid of those awkwardly positioned fingerprint sensors.
How will Clear ID affect the smartphones?
For starters, the smartphones coming with Clear ID would be slimmer as they wouldn’t need a separate module for a fingerprint reader.
We are not sure about the pricing, but the removal of a separate ceramic fingerprint reader module should put somewhat a dent in the cost of a smartphone.
