Middle-Class versus Nintendo Switch

Everyone from the gaming industry is aware of this quote somewhere even if they haven’t heard of it directly.
But sometimes, compact and portable is what we look for.
But what if we can have the best of both worlds?
Mr. Austin Evans tried that with a PS4 slim, you should totally check that video out.
That wasn’t something completely feasible but if you’re really desperate, that’d have worked for you.
But what we wanted was a console which we can carry in the pocket and can be connected to the TV to give you that fully immersive experience.
And Nintendo gave us exactly that.
Last year in March, Nintendo launched their latest gaming console “Nintendo Switch” and the world wasn’t sure how to react.
A hand-held gaming console whose USP is that you can play Zelda on it isn’t exactly the first thing you want to spend your money on.
But things started changing soon as more and more titles were released over time.
and sooner than anyone realized, everyone wanted to get a Switch of their own.
And everyone had their own reason, let it be Nostalgia, Portability or just the urge to try something new.
What else? That thing is aesthetically pleasing. It is simply beautiful.
I personally prefer the Red and Blue joy-con setup but the possibilities are limitless.
There are custom skins and covers available for each and every part of the Nintendo Switch.
Talking about joy-cons, they’re WEIRD. Takes a little bit of time to get habitual of those little things in your hand.
They have an inbuilt battery which is charged when connected to the Switch.
Another important part of the console is the DOCK.
This is what we actually use to connect it to the TV. All you have to do is slip your Nintendo Switch in and you’re ready to go.
Being customizable, it’s one of the most fun consoles out there and you can find all sort of video tutorials for DIY customizations.
Now, it’s time to answer the questions that should be popping up in your mind.
Can Nintendo Switch replace the current market leaders?
Gaming console market is basically a Sony vs Microsoft with Nintendo giving people who’re fed up of this console battle an option to try something new.
And that’s the case with Nintendo Switch as well.
It is a breath of fresh air for those who want to try something new or want something portable to go with.
But with the current game catalog, it doesn’t have much to offer.
Apart from that, the games are pretty expensive when compared to its other counterparts.
Almost all the games are available over the price-point of ₹4,000.
I’ve been using the PS4 slim for a few months now and the most expensive game I bought was NBA 2K18 for ₹2,500 and that’s probably the most I am going to pay for a game unless it offers something really special.
Are there other things I should consider before getting the console?
To discuss this, I think we should take a look at the specs first.
Size: Approximately 4 inches high, 9.4 inches long, and 0.55 inches deep (with Joy-Con attached).
Weight: Approximately 400gms (with joy-Con attached).
Screen: 6.2 inches LCD screen (1280X720)
CPU/GPU: NVIDIA Custom Tegra processor
Storage: 32GB internal storage( can be extended up to 2TB using microSD/microSDHC/microSDXC memory cards).
Wireless Connectivity: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1 enabled.
Video output: Up to 1080p via HDMI and up to 720p via the built-in screen.
Internal Battery: 4310mAh(Lithium-ion battery).
On paper, the specs look quite promising but there are two major concerns with the Nintendo Switch.
First: Internal Storage.
Being a console owner and a gamer, I know one thing for sure. 32GB isn’t enough.
and as underlined in the specs sheet, we have micro SD card slots and they’re damn expensive.
So unless you have loads of money lying around or you are getting the Switch for a single title, the storage is going to be an issue.
Second: Battery life.
The Switch ideally lasts 6-7 hours on paper. But when you start playing, it lasts for around 3 hours or so.
Not that bad, but for people like me who travel for 6 hours daily, that’s not up to the mark.
Now, the real question which might be popping up in your minds!
Is the Nintendo Switch even worth buying?
It definitely isn’t a console for everyone.
But there are many things which attract the general public and everything just looks and feels fine.
Let’s break down the users on the basis of the point of interests.
Yes:
- Traveller
- Children
- Mobile Gamers who wish to play something more meaningful than candy crush or temple run.
- If you want to try something new even with a risk of getting disappointed.
No:
- If you already have a console.
- You’re more of a couch potato.
- Hardcore gamers.
The scenario will and is changing drastically as more and more AAA games are being released or are set to release for the Nintendo Switch.
But until the Switch has a game library with a decent amount of games in it, I will not change the list.
How much should I pay for Nintendo Switch?
That’s the sad part about the Nintendo Switch (or any other gaming console in general as I discussed here).
It costs $300 in the US market but here in India the prices are still as high as the Eiffel Tower(₹30,000 or so).
It doesn’t make sense. Personally speaking, $300 is too much for the console in its current state anyway.
I’d max it out at around $230(₹15,000).
Asking ₹30,000 which is equivalent to around $470 is just insane.
And what’s unbelievable is that the pricing has dropped drastically. It was available for around ₹42,000 at the time of release.
So, if you’re one of the people I mentioned about above and is getting the console for ₹15,000 or less somehow, buy it.
Otherwise, wait for some time.
